The Use of Artificial Intelligence for UC Davis Communications

Artificial Intelligence is a quickly evolving field full of exciting possibilities for use in the workforce. As we proceed with developing our UC Davis policy regarding the use of AI generated imagery and content, please adhere to the following guidelines, which will certainly make it into the governing policy:

1. Do not use AI generated imagery to represent the UC Davis brand, UC Davis locations, or UC Davis people in internal- or external-facing content or communications.

2. Do provide image attribution for images generated from artificial intelligence tools. The caption area would be preferred, but if not possible, provide the image attribution somewhere visible on the page, as you would for vendor provided images such as Getty.

There are many AI generated images that are entirely acceptable use cases. When images involve UC Davis locations, people, or the UC Davis brand, the subject matter enters reputational territory, especially when connected to official UC Davis communications.

If you have questions about what comprises the UC Davis brand, please consider the boundaries of the UC Davis brand as anything and everything listed or mentioned on the Communications Guide website, specifically the content housed in the Brand Guide section, which among other things, lists wordmarks, colors, mastheads, and fonts.

If you are generating editorial content, please make sure it adheres to the guidelines set forth in the Editorial Style Guide.

If you encounter issues regarding the borderlines, or perhaps fuzziness, of these evolving topics, please feel free to contact us at Strategic Communications, as we are a campus resource and would be happy to provide guidance on boundary issues.
