Many of our accessibility guidelines are recommended because part of the community is consuming social media content using various assistive technologies like a screen reader, screen magnifier, voice browsing and recognition software, or video captions.
Screen readers are software programs that allow users with visual impairment to read the text that is displayed on the computer screen or smartphone with a speech synthesizer or braille display. Screen magnifiers enhance the size of text on a screen for users to read in their preferred size. Voice browsing softwares recognize the voice of a user to interpret a command and navigate a device through speech input and output.
It is important to know that assistive technology is utilized differently by people depending on software, device, and personal preference. While we cannot control how these technologies read social media platforms, our goal is to make sure we have included the right information, like easily readable post copy, alt text, image/video descriptions, and caption files so that folks using these technologies have the option to consume our content in an optimal way for them.
